St. Mary’s Athletic Club. Last Friday evening, October 23, we had our annual club bowling trip to Fun World on the Ennis Road. Twenty two children attended and a good night was had by all. Afterwards we had our annual club awards. Club person/persons.
The first award went to Darren Jones. Darren joined the club in 2007 and established himself as a fine athlete winning Munster and All Ireland medals, both individual and team events. He is a boy with a bright future and is a worthy winner of this award.
The second award went to Padraig Power. Padraig joined the club three years ago. At training he gives it his all and never shies away from any event. He likes sprinting, but shines at cross country, his first love, and has won individual Munster medals for his beloved cross country. He is small in height but has the heart of a lion and deserves this club award.
The third award went to Rachel Lynch. Rachel started running when she was seven and is very dedicated to training and just loves everything about running and always puts in one hundred per cent effort. She is a worthy winner of this club award.
The fourth award went to Amy Hartnett. Amy joined the club two years ago and does not shy away from any event, sprints, cross country, long jump, relays, she just loves her running and has a bright future ahead of her. Another worthy winner of this club award.
The Liam English perpetual trophy went to the best overall team: The girls under twelve indoor relay team All Ireland champions. Last February they won the Munster Indoor title under twelve. They then made the long journey to the All Ireland Indoor championships in Magherfelt, Co. Derry. The furthest they ever travelled and what was the fastest time they ever ran 57-78 the girls ran away with the final. They lead from gun to post the best race they every ran, everything to perfection. It was a great achievement for these girls to win an All Ireland title at such a young age. These girls are worthy winners of the Liam English perpetual trophy.

ATHLETICS SUCCESS
Dungarvan in Co. Waterford, was the
venue on Sunday last for the
Munster even age cross country
championships and the St. Mary’s
A.C., Boys U-16 team were making
their annual pilgrimage to that most
demanding of events. This time the
distance was a formidable 3,000m,
over a rather flat course with one
long gradual incline but it would suit
the sprinters/track athletes more
than the real cross country runner.
A healthy sixty athletes or more
lined up at the start and after the
usual hectic sprint the real race
developed. It was obvious from the
beginning that race favourites
Togher A.C., were well in command
with four athletes in the top twelve
but our boys ‘packed’ well in real
cross country style with Ciaran
English striving very hard to catch up
to Darren Jones who was motoring
well inside the top twenty.
Declan Mullane too was moving well
keeping his companions in sight
while at the halfway stage Martin
Roche was our fourth and scoring
runner but a little encouragement
from the sideline was enough to get
Steve O’Reilly into a longer stride
and he gave chase to close the gap
on Martin as did young Mark Mullane
a little further back. The quality of
athletes in this particular age group
has been very strong all the way up
along since U-10 and it was evident
that all these boys had trained really
hard for the distance and there
would be no hand medals on offer on
the day (nor did we expect any). The
race finished with Darren Jones a
very creditable 16th closely followed
by Ciaran (17th), Declan (28th), Steve
(30th) and Martin and Mark just
behind these boys.
With only four to score it would be
very easy to opt out and let some
other four do the hard work but tactically
it was one of the best races
ever for all these boys as a team
with each and every one of them
fighting to make the scoring four and
putting pressure and offering
encouragement to each other. In the
end it paid off when the results
showed that the team finished third
in such a high quality entry, beaten
by a brilliant team from Togher and
a very good Clonmel A.C. team.
Considering that these boys have
never finished outside of the top
three teams in Munster cross country
in the last five years over distances
that have increased steadily
from 800m to 3,000m, then that is a
considerable achievement, one that
each one of them should be very
proud of. Our training has been hampered
with injury over the last
month as all of them expect Darren
have suffered at one time or another
so hopefully we will get an injury
free ‘run’ for the next month in our
training for the All Ireland which will
be on in Westmeath on November 22
(they will be contesting their sixth in
a row).
Finally on behalf of the team I would
like to wish a speedy recovery to
Eoin O’Donnell who has been out of
action for the last two weeks but he
still travelled on Sunday to cheer on
his team and hopefully we will have
him back for the national final. Well
done also to the parents that travelled
as always with this team, long
may it continue.

UNDER-10 GIRLS SHIELD
The U10 girls played their second game
against Holly Cross on Sunday.
The team lined out with Emma Harnett in
goals, Zoe Mulcair in the backs with Kelly
Naughton in midfield. We had Casey
O’Riordan, Rachel, Chloe Cunningham and up
front was Katie Brennan and Maeve Power.
The game started well for the girls and had a
lot of pressure on and it paid off after seven
minutes when Maeve Power scored a great
goal with her left foot. At this stage you
would have thought they would go on and win
handy enough but bad decision making in the
backs allowed a soft goal in to make it one
all.
The girls picked it up again and went two one
up again from a goal from Katie Brennan and
then went three one up, another goal from
Katie.
The game was nearing half time and with the
girls well on top gave away another goal to
make it three two at half time.
The second half started brightly again for the
home side and within five minutes Maeve got
her second and at this stage Emily Hogg
replaced Kelly and Emily got straight in to it
and cleared a lot of ball from the backs.
The midfield of Casey Rachel and Chloe
worked hard and were well on top, Chloe
doing a good job on marking Holly Cross, best
player.
At this stage it was all Rathkeale and they
should have had another few goals. Jesse
Williams came on for Casey for her first under
ten game and played well. With time running
out it was left to Maeve to complete her hat
trick with another well taken goal to leave the
score 5-2. It was great to see these girls put in
a better performance than two weeks ago but
they will have tougher games ahead.
