ATHLETICS SUCCESS
Dungarvan in Co. Waterford, was the
venue on Sunday last for the
Munster even age cross country
championships and the St. Mary’s
A.C., Boys U-16 team were making
their annual pilgrimage to that most
demanding of events. This time the
distance was a formidable 3,000m,
over a rather flat course with one
long gradual incline but it would suit
the sprinters/track athletes more
than the real cross country runner.
A healthy sixty athletes or more
lined up at the start and after the
usual hectic sprint the real race
developed. It was obvious from the
beginning that race favourites
Togher A.C., were well in command
with four athletes in the top twelve
but our boys ‘packed’ well in real
cross country style with Ciaran
English striving very hard to catch up
to Darren Jones who was motoring
well inside the top twenty.
Declan Mullane too was moving well
keeping his companions in sight
while at the halfway stage Martin
Roche was our fourth and scoring
runner but a little encouragement
from the sideline was enough to get
Steve O’Reilly into a longer stride
and he gave chase to close the gap
on Martin as did young Mark Mullane
a little further back. The quality of
athletes in this particular age group
has been very strong all the way up
along since U-10 and it was evident
that all these boys had trained really
hard for the distance and there
would be no hand medals on offer on
the day (nor did we expect any). The
race finished with Darren Jones a
very creditable 16th closely followed
by Ciaran (17th), Declan (28th), Steve
(30th) and Martin and Mark just
behind these boys.
With only four to score it would be
very easy to opt out and let some
other four do the hard work but tactically
it was one of the best races
ever for all these boys as a team
with each and every one of them
fighting to make the scoring four and
putting pressure and offering
encouragement to each other. In the
end it paid off when the results
showed that the team finished third
in such a high quality entry, beaten
by a brilliant team from Togher and
a very good Clonmel A.C. team.
Considering that these boys have
never finished outside of the top
three teams in Munster cross country
in the last five years over distances
that have increased steadily
from 800m to 3,000m, then that is a
considerable achievement, one that
each one of them should be very
proud of. Our training has been hampered
with injury over the last
month as all of them expect Darren
have suffered at one time or another
so hopefully we will get an injury
free ‘run’ for the next month in our
training for the All Ireland which will
be on in Westmeath on November 22
(they will be contesting their sixth in
a row).
Finally on behalf of the team I would
like to wish a speedy recovery to
Eoin O’Donnell who has been out of
action for the last two weeks but he
still travelled on Sunday to cheer on
his team and hopefully we will have
him back for the national final. Well
done also to the parents that travelled
as always with this team, long
may it continue.
